Description:
For those who don’t know, a lightning talk is a 5-10 minute presentation designed to be quick, insightful, and informative. Drinks and nibbles will be provided by SESOC ESE in between our guest speakers so we encourage you to network by mixing and mingling with other likeminded emerging structural engineers!"
Our guest speakers include; Michael Carter (Wingates Architects), Zac Slako (BCD Group), Eva Cuttriss (Holmes Engineering), and Richard Malcolm (Asterix Structures Ltd.).

See more information below regarding our guest speakers and their respective presentation topics:

Michael Carter
Presentation topic: Discussing the design process from early bulk and location stages through to the detailed design phase and the importance of communication between Architects and Engineers.
I have worked in architecture for 8 years, graduating from Auckland University in 2016. My first 5 years were spent working at Architectus which involved large scale commercial projects. I then moved to Tauranga to work at Wingates in 2022 and was made an Associate early this year. I am currently working on some private healthcare buildings which are under construction in Tauranga and Christchurch as well as other commercial & residential projects throughout the country.

Zac Slako
Presentation topic: How to interpret simple hand auger logs, key data to look for, and certain things that may catch people out.
I am in my second year working as a geotechnical engineer at BCD Group after graduating from Auckland University in 2022. The projects I've worked on range from small residential properties to large-scale subdivisions and developments.

Eva Cuttriss
Presentation topic: Lessons learnt in structural engineering, from buildability to communication.
I joined Holmes in 2002 as a Structural engineering graduate of University of Canterbury and have since delivered a broad range of projects throughout New Zealand, from sport stadiums to courthouses. Since arriving in Tauranga in 2019, my most notable projects include leading the structural design delivery on the new Farmers building on Elizabeth Street and the Waikato Regional Theatre in Hamilton.

Richard Malcolm
Presentation topic:
The design of temporary works for mass timber buildings.
I am a Chartered Professional Engineer who has been practicing as a structural engineer for over 10 years.  During my career I have led the structural design and delivery of many architecturally driven projects, ranging from a performing arts theatre, multi-level carpark buildings, apartments and healthcare projects.
Involvement in these projects has called for varying levels of responsibility within a project team, from hands on structural design to responsibility for engineering teams and external consultant relationships. The majority of my career to date has been spent in the Auckland construction market, and more recently involvement in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions.
