David Downey was a leading Auckland engineering consultant until his retirement in 1987 as the Chairman of Directors of Worley Group Limited (now part of the international consultancy AECOM).

David completed his engineering studies in 1950 and joined celebrated consulting engineer, Ralph Worley’s practice in Auckland. He worked on the development of Auckland’s North Shore sewage reticulation and treatment plant, and later major sewage scheme contracts in Tauranga, Whanganui and Waitara.

David expanded the business overseas and secured a sewage project, and later in association with Beca Carter, highway projects, in Malaysia.
