Join the Waikato Branch for a rare, close-up look at Hamilton’s largest and only wastewater treatment facility – the Pukete Wastewater Treatment Plant – as it races through a massive $56 million upgrade to future proof the city's wastewater network for the next 30 years.

Built in 1975 and last upgraded in 2002, the Pukete plant treats around 50 million litres of wastewater daily, serving over 50,000 households and 4,000 commercial and industrial premises. The current upgrade is one of Hamilton’s largest infrastructure investments, delivering significant improvements in capacity, treatment quality, and operational resilience.

You’ll get a guided walkthrough of new bioreactors, clarifiers, upgraded chemical storage, pump station and New Zealand's largest inlet screening facilities – all designed to boost performance, capacity, and environmental sustainability. You'll also hear how the team is navigating complex sequencing to keep the plant operational during the upgrade.

This tour isn’t just for water nerds – it’s a must for anyone interested in how engineering is shaping the future of liveable cities. It is also a rare opportunity to explore the integration of new and legacy systems on a live site and see large-scale municipal engineering in action.

PPE required: Steel-capped boots and high-vis vest.

Free for Engineering New Zealand members / $5 for non-members.
