The plan is to visit Birchville Dam and Macaskill Lakes in the Wellington Region. We will start the day with an in-person presentation / briefing at Wellington Water office in Petone (IBM House, 25 Victoria Street, Petone). Afterwards we will drive to site to visit the dams.

An indicative itinerary for the field trip is provided below for information: 

  • Presentation / briefing at Wellington Water office - IBM House, 25 Victoria Street, Petone (30-45 mins).
  • Drive from Wellington Water’s office to Cannon Point Walkway Bridge Rd Car Park, 70 Bridge Road, Birchville, Upper Hutt 5018 (30 mins)
  • Walk from the car park to Birchville Dam (15 mins)
  • Spend time at Birchville Dam (30 mins)
  • Walk back to the car park (15 mins)
  • Drive from Cannon Point Walkway Bridge Rd Car Park to Macaskill Lakes (15 mins)
  • Spend time at Macaskill Lakes (60 mins)
  • Drive back to Wellington

Please note attendees are responsible for organising their own transport. However we encourage carpooling for sustainable reasons. To facilitate carpooling, we are planning to create and share with attendees a register of people who will be driving and able to take other people with them on the day.

This event is for NZSOLD members and YPs based in the Wellington Region.
A light lunch will be provided. 

There are limited space and currently we expect to have up to 30 spots for people on the field trip (TBC) with priority first given to YP members before opening up to other NZSOLD members.

PPE: A JSA will be prepared and circulated to prior to the field trip. At this stage, we expect the PPE required for the field trip to include:

  • Long pants
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Steel capped shoes
  • High-vis

The New Zealand Society on Large Dams are please to provide the opportunity for an expression of interest for a regional dam field trip to visit Birchville Dam and Macaskill Lakes in the Wellington Region. The Birchville Dam was the second arch dam built in NZ and it was built to supply water to Upper Hutt until 1954. Macaskill Lakes are two large storage lakes at Te Marua that provide back-up to the Hutt River water supply.
