The Quake centre is a dynamic partnership between the New Zealand Government, the University of Canterbury, and several leading industry groups, all working together to provide world-class knowledge, research and solutions to seismic issues.

This module is the second in a series of 3 designed to help you refresh and expand your engineering earthquake knowledge and skills that you learned attaining your degree or in the early part of your career.

The other two modules in this series are:

  • Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering
  • Seismic Design to New Zealand Loading Code

Learning Outcomes:

This module gives an outline of the most important principles and analytical methods associated with dynamics of structures, and an account of particular issues relating to seismic analysis. It will provide an introductory understanding of dynamic behaviour of structures including:

  • Basics of structural dynamics
  • Dynamic response of single degree of freedom systems
  • Earthquake response of inelastic systems
  • Seismic load path and dynamic behaviour of multi-storey structure

Please note this module is not aimed to comprehensively teach ALL concepts related to dynamic concepts for Seismic Design.

Intended Audience

This module is intended for an engineer unfamiliar with structural dynamic concepts for seismic design.

This module is not formally assessed. However, at key points throughout the topics, you are asked to complete short quizzes to check your knowledge and understanding of the topic. If you do not answer all questions correctly, you will be able to go back and review any of the topics, at any time, and then retake the quiz.
