The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is making changes to when it releases updates to the Building Code.
Currently, the Building Code is updated twice a year – in June and November. There will only be one update released this year and future updates will occur annually.
Need to know
- The update to the Building Code due in June this year will now be released 24 September 2020
- The following update will be released on October 2021
- Future updates will occur annually
Why the change?
MBIE has delayed this year’s scheduled update as it recognises that with the challenges presented by Covid-19, the sector may not be able to engage with updates at this time.
Taking on board feedback from stakeholders, MBIE aims to reduce the burden on the sector by only seeking feedback on proposed changes once a year.
After working through a backlog of Building Code updates over the last two years, MBIE has a better understanding of the sector’s ability to absorb and adapt to Building code changes.
MBIE is confident that annual updates will be sufficient for the Building Code to remain credible and up to date.
MBIE will still be able to release urgent updates if required.
