With the demand for engineering talent increasing across New Zealand, employers are looking overseas to address skill shortages. As of 1 October 2024, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has introduced new visa application fees and levies, which may impact employers' budgets for hiring overseas workers. Understanding these updated costs is essential to ensure a smooth and compliant recruitment process.
Employer Accreditation fees
The first step for any employer seeking to hire migrant workers is to obtain accreditation through INZ. This accreditation demonstrates that your company meets the required standards for hiring overseas employees. Starting in October, the standard accreditation fee for hiring up to five migrants at any one time is now $775. The high-volume accreditation fee is now $1,280.
Job Check fees
After gaining accreditation, the next step is to pass the Job Check process, which ensures that the role cannot be filled by New Zealand workers. The updated cost for a Job Check is now $735.
Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
Once accreditation and Job Check are completed, the worker can apply for the Accredited Employer Work Visa at the latest price of $1,540. This visa allows employees to work for accredited employers in New Zealand for the duration of their visa.
Family and residence visa costs
If overseas workers intend to bring family to New Zealand, employers should be aware of the associated costs. Partner visas for workers are now $1,630, while dependent child student visas cost $750.
If assisting employees in obtaining residence, the new fee for the Skilled Residence Visa is $6,450. This is a significant investment but are critical for employers seeking long-term retention of overseas talents.
Case scenario: immigration fee for an engineering firm hiring overseas talent
For instance, if an engineering firm plans to hire a civil engineer from overseas, and the worker intends to bring their partner and a child, the cost might include:
- Employer Accreditation (standard): $775
- Job Check Fee: $735
- AEWV for the worker: $1,540
- Partner Visa: $1,630
- Dependent Child Student Visa: $750
The total cost will be $5,430 for recruiting an overseas civil engineer, excluding any additional costs such as relocation expenses or professional fees
To remain competitive in New Zealand’s talent market, employers need to stay informed and budget for the updated fees. Proper planning will help avoid unexpected costs and ensure compliance with immigration regulations. With the new fees starting in October, it is time to review your hiring strategy and budget.
