We're undertaking a project to strengthen the current Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) system. This work will support current operations and help us transition to a future occupational regulatory regime.
Project update
Our current CPEng work is focused on two areas.
1. Assessments and reassessments
We are working to strengthen our assessment and reassessment processes, within the current CPEng Rules. To date we have mapped the entire system, identified areas for improvement and addressed quick wins. We are now developing updated operating procedures across all assessment and reassessment processes. These procedures will inform improved guidance for applicants, assessors and staff. We are also working to clarify the role of Bodies of Knowledge and Skills within assessment and reassessment processes.
2. Registration Authority governance
Currently the Engineering New Zealand Governing Board also governs the work of the Registration Authority for Chartered Professional Engineers. We have heard clearly from members, CPEng holders and other stakeholders that this is a perceived conflict of interest given our duties both to members and regulating professional standards. To resolve this, we are separating governance of the Registration Authority from the Engineering New Zealand Governing Board by establishing a new Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) Board. This board will come into effect in early 2022.
Can you help us govern CPEng?
We need CPEng holders to help us govern the CPEng system. We're now calling for expressions of interest for the new CPEng Board. There are two vacancies.
If you hold current CPEng registration and have knowledge, skills and experience that will help us to meet our statutory requirements – we'd love to hear from you.
We'll then provide you with draft Terms of Reference for board members and more information on the appointments process. Expressions of interest close 11 November.
