In 2020, the Chartered Professional Engineers process was reviewed and a project created to improve the applicant experience and make the system more efficient and effective.
Since then, major changes have been made, in particular:
- A new governance body for the Registration Authority has been created – the Chartered Professional Engineers Registration Board, which is distinct from Engineering New Zealand’s Governing Board. This reduces the risk of conflict of interests given our duties both to members and regulating professional standards.
- A complete end-to-end documentation regarding the operations of the Registration Authority has been developed and approved.
PROCEDURES
The last few months have seen some important changes for the CPEng project in the following workstreams.
Credential check
Changes to the Credential Checks procedures have been implemented from June 2022. These changes include new guidance for applicants and a third-party authentication of all applicants.
Knowledge assessment
New operating procedures manual have been drafted and finalised. We are now working to implement the new process, making it more flexible and adaptive. These new options will be implemented by end of the year.
CPEng assessment
New operating procedures are currently being finalised.
We are also trialling a new disclosure process with a cluster of building consent authorities. Chartered Professional Engineers are obliged to meet certain standards and the role of the Registration Authority is to make sure that these standards are met.
To help us make sure an engineer is suitable for registration or reregistration, a public industry disclosure process is being trialled, whereby the public can raise comments or concerns about the engineers. The trial will last a few months.
Reassessment
New operating procedures are currently being drafted. We have also introduced new Structural Reassessment Guidance, as well as new guidance on referees. Soon we intend to release new guidance on self-assessments and continued professional development.
FEES
CPEng fees have also been reviewed, updated and approved. The annual registration fee will increase from $460 to $506 and other fees have been revised as given below.
These increases will take effect from 1 January 2023.
