With Te Wiki o te Reo Māori upon us for another year, now is a great time to start your te reo journey or re-engage and continue your progress. There are abundant resources available online to help you develop your capabilities – so what can you do to help take your te reo to the next level?
Embrace te reo with your kaimahi in the workplace
Some common words and phrases around the office have been translated by Reo Māori which you can download and distribute around your workplace and include in emails, discussions and other communications. By including te reo in your daily activity, it communicates that you’re wanting to embrace the language and it could prompt further discussion about how your organisation can increase the use of te reo.
Take it one day at a time
The challenge of picking up te reo can also be broken into a word-a-day project, which might be preferable to those who prefer a more regimented learning experience. New Zealand History has put together a list of 365 words and phrases across many common themes and topics that you might come across regularly. If you sign up to Kupu o te Rā, you’ll receive a daily email with the word of the day, so you can take your te reo journey day by day – literally.

Formalise your te reo knowledge and get a qualification
If you enjoy getting involved with Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, why not formalise your learning and take things to the next level? Te Wānanga o Aotearoa has a 38-week course that can be studied for free, earning graduates a New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Reo Rua) Level 1 and Level 2 – Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) Te Kaupae 1 me 2.
