Rhys Thomas completed his Engineering Intermediate examination at Auckland University College before joining the Air Force in 1944.
He finished a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) at Canterbury University College in 1949 and began his engineering career at Hamilton City Council.
In 1960 he purchased a consulting practice in South Auckland, joining with old friend Peter Fraser FEngNZ two years later to found Fraser Thomas Consultants. With a merger in 1969 the firm became Fraser Thomas Gunman Shaw & Partners.
Rhys was involved with many organisations including the Papatoetoe Lions Club, scouts, guides and school boards.
