Learn how to end things early if it's not going well, or what to do at the end of our formal programme. And make sure you give us some feedback on Mentor : : Me.

Ending the partnership early

Your partnership may need to end earlier than intended. This could be because despite your best intentions and effort the partnership is not working, or either party finds that their circumstances have changed, and they are no longer able to commit the time and effort.

Challenges that might hinder the partnership include:

  • Personality issues
  • Lack of awareness of the individual's role in the relationship
  • Dissatisfaction about the way the mentoring is conducted
  • Unrealistic expectations about what mentoring can achieve
  • A lack or blurring of boundaries in the relationship

If you encounter these challenges, you may want to consider ending the partnership early. We know this won’t be easy, so if you do find yourself in this situation you can contact us for support and guidance. We also ask that you complete an Early Exit Form.

Concluding the programme

The Mentor : : Me programme is intended to last for 9 months, however it might draw to a natural conclusion earlier. Regardless of when it ends, here are some tips to bring the partnership to a successful conclusion.

  • Confirm the date for the final meeting so you can prepare to reflect on the entire programme and partnership
  • Celebrate success – look at the mentee goals that were set when you first met. We are confident you will be able to celebrate your achievements when you both see how far you have come
  • Say goodbye – think of how the session can be ended on a positive note. Talk about the things you most enjoyed, what you’ll remember most or the most important things you’ve both learned

Keep the relationship going

Sometimes a partnership works so well, you might want to keep it going outside of our formal programme. We are more than happy for you to do this, as long as you are both in agreement. This might include regular meetings if you're still actively working towards a goal, or just check-ins when a challenge arises that the mentee needs help with.
